Lost your job? Got married? Moved recently? You may qualify for health insurance right now — even outside Open Enrollment. Learn the 7 life events that trigger Special Enrollment.
Life Doesn’t Wait — and Neither Should Your Health Coverage
Open Enrollment comes once a year — but life doesn’t follow that schedule.
That’s why the Special Enrollment Period (SEP) exists. If you’ve recently gone through a major life event, you might qualify to get covered right now — even if Open Enrollment is closed.
Here are the 7 most common situations that unlock your chance to enroll immediately.
✅ 1. You Lost Your Health Insurance
This is one of the most urgent — and most misunderstood — triggers. If you:
Got laid off
Left your job
Aged off a parent’s plan
Lost Medicaid or CHIP coverage
Had COBRA expire
...you typically have 60 days from the date your coverage ended to sign up for a new plan.
Act fast — miss the window and you may have to wait months for the next opportunity.
✅ 2. You Moved to a New Area
Even if your old plan is technically still active, moving to a new ZIP code, county, or state means your plan might not work where you live now.
You can qualify for SEP if:
You moved permanently to a new address
You had qualified coverage before the move
This is one of the easiest ways to get covered — especially if you just relocated for work, school, or family.
✅ 3. You Got Married or Divorced
Changing your marital status opens the door to adjust your health plan — or get on one for the first time.
If you just:
Got married
Got divorced and lost coverage from your spouse’s plan
You qualify for SEP and may even be able to combine household income to get better subsidies.
✅ 4. You Had a Baby or Adopted a Child
This is a high-priority life event under ACA rules.
Whether you:
Gave birth
Adopted a child
Had a child placed with you for foster care
...you can enroll your child and your entire household during this period — and retroactive coverage may apply, too.
✅ 5. Your Immigration Status Changed
If you recently gained lawful presence in the U.S., you may now qualify for coverage under the ACA.
This includes:
Green card holders
Refugees or asylees
Victims of trafficking
Those granted temporary protected status (TPS)
If you're not sure whether your status qualifies, I can help you check — confidentially.
✅ 6. You Were Released from Incarceration
If you've recently been released from jail or prison, you're eligible to apply for ACA coverage immediately — and may qualify for $0 premium plans.
This is often overlooked, but it's your legal right to access affordable health care after reentry.
✅ 7. There Was a Change in Your Income
A change in your household income can either qualify you for new subsidies or create a Special Enrollment Period on its own — especially if it affects your eligibility for Medicaid or ACA coverage.
If your income:
Dropped suddenly
Increased and disqualified you from Medicaid
Shifted due to freelance or seasonal work
...you may qualify for new plan options now.
