New changes to the ACA mean automatic renewals are going away. Learn what this means for your health coverage — and how to avoid losing your plan.
A Big Change Just Happened — and It Could Cost You Your Health Coverage
If you’ve ever been automatically re-enrolled in your health insurance plan, you might think you’re set for next year.
But that’s no longer guaranteed.
As of the new healthcare bill passed 07/03/2025, automatic ACA re-enrollment is being phased out.
Here’s what that means, who it affects, and what you need to do to protect your coverage — before it’s too late.
🚨 What’s Changing?
In previous years, if you didn’t actively log into your ACA account during Open Enrollment, the system would automatically:
Re-enroll you in the same plan (if available)
Carry over your income info
Apply your subsidy (premium tax credit) for the next year
That’s gone.
Starting this fall, you’ll need to manually verify your income and renew your coverage — or you could lose your plan.
❗ Why This Matters
If you don’t take action:
You may lose your subsidy
Your plan may not renew
You could get dropped altogether
You might end up with no coverage on Jan 1, 2026
Even worse — if you miss Open Enrollment, you may not be able to enroll again unless you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.
🧾 What You’ll Be Required to Do Now
Here’s your new to-do list:
✅ 1. Manually Reapply Each Year
You must actively reapply or update your info during Open Enrollment (Nov 1 – Jan 15)
✅ 2. Update Income & Household Info
Even small changes in income can affect your subsidy or eligibility — and under the new bill, the system will verify more strictly.
✅ 3. Choose a New Plan (If Yours Was Discontinued)
If your plan or carrier exits the marketplace, you must pick a new one — or the system may assign a plan with higher costs and worse coverage.
✅ 4. File Taxes Every Year
To keep your subsidy, you must file a tax return and reconcile any past subsidies — this is now being enforced more aggressively.
👥 Who’s Most at Risk?
